Maria’s passion for art and the environment, as well as her entrepreneurial and humanist spirit come from her family’s heritage; her father, a pioneering developer of the revitalization of modern Portland, Maine; her brothers, whose life-long interests are environmental sciences and development, and her Mother’s family relations in politics and service.
Maria studied at the American University in Paris and received a Master’s Degree in 20th century art history. She was discovered by Yves Saint Laurent and went on to have an international modeling career with the world’s legendary designers, artists and photographers. Maria rose to international fame as an innovative fashion designer, turning her art into design. She was heralded by Tiffany as “one of the hottest fashion designers” globally.
Maria is considered a pioneer in eco fashion, as “one of the first designers to introduce an exclusive eco fashion collection created from recycled materials.”
She coined the phrase “Nouvelle Couture”, introducing a modern concept of traditional couture. Her innovative designs in art and fashion have won her numerous accolades and recognition from the Encyclopedia of Costume Jewelry, the U.S. Department of Commerce and has earned her a nomination on the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
